Sarah slipped the left shoe on. Elias grunted, curious about this new weight on his foot. "Big boy shoes," Sarah whispered.
As they exited the mall, Elias didn't want the stroller. He held Sarah’s index finger with a white-knuckled grip and marched toward the parking lot. Each step was heavy and uncoordinated, but purposeful. The world had just gotten a lot taller, and Elias was ready to explore every inch of it. 👟
She stood him up on the carpet. Elias wobbled. The rubber soles gripped the floor in a way his socks never could. He looked up at her, wide-eyed, then looked down at his feet. He took one tentative step. The shoe squeaked. He laughed, a high-pitched sound of pure discovery. The New World
Up until today, Elias had been a professional crawler. He was a blur of motion on hands and knees, a heat-seeking missile for dropped Cheerios and dusty corners. But lately, he had been pulling himself up on the coffee table, his eyes fixed on the horizon of the hallway.
Elias sat on the fitting stool, his legs dangling. His mother, Sarah, held a pair of stiff, white leather shoes. They looked like tiny clouds with laces.
