Old Is Earth — How

Sea plants and first multicellular organisms emerge. 11:00 PM: Dinosaurs arrive. 11:40 PM: Dinosaurs go extinct. 11:58 PM: Modern humans (Homo sapiens) appear.

The Earth is approximately , with a margin of error of about 50 million years (roughly 1%). How we know how old is earth

To make that massive number easier to visualize, imagine Earth’s entire history squeezed into a single : 12:00 AM: Earth forms. 4:00 AM: First simple, single-celled life appears. Sea plants and first multicellular organisms emerge

While the planet itself is billions of years old, most of the complex life and recorded history we study occurred in the final few "minutes" of its existence. 11:58 PM: Modern humans (Homo sapiens) appear

Scientists arrived at this number primarily through of meteorite fragments and the oldest known rocks from the Earth and Moon. By measuring the decay of radioactive isotopes (like uranium turning into lead), geologists can calculate how much time has passed since the rock formed. The timeline in perspective

Testimonials

“The help I got from the harm reduction program was more than just clean equipment, it was about being with people who didn’t judge me for my addiction, and who really wanted to help.”
~ Sam, a 50-year-old former drug user and sex worker in Carrboro, NC

“Too often, drug users suffer discrimination, are forced to accept treatment, marginalized, and often harmed by approaches which over-emphasize criminalization and punishment while under-emphasizing harm reduction and respect for human rights. This is despite the longstanding evidence that a harm reduction approach is the most effective way of protecting rights, limiting personal suffering, and reducing the incidence of HIV.”
~ Navanethem Pillay, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, March 10, 2009
