Elara woke up on a slab of marble that used to be a library floor. Now, it was just a raft in a sea of nothing. She didn't remember the fire, but she remembered the smell of old paper burning. That was the Calamity for her—the day the stories turned to ash.

Her goal was the Core—the one place where the ground still held. They said if you turned the Great Key there, the pieces would fly back together like a shattered mirror finding its frame. I find it so hard to come up

"Keep movin', girl," a voice echoed, though there wasn't a soul in sight. It was just the wind playing tricks, or maybe the ghost of the Librarian who always told her to keep her voice down.
