Instead, Minsky posits that the mind is a vast collection of interconnected, specialized processes called "resources." If a machine encounters a problem it cannot solve logically, it should be able to switch to an analogical way of thinking, or even an emotional state like frustration, which might trigger a search for entirely new strategies. To explain this dynamic activation, Minsky introduces the concept of "Selectors." Selectors are high-level mechanisms that monitor the environment and the internal state of the system. When a Selector recognizes a particular problem or context, it activates a specific suite of resources best suited to handle it. This "rule-based" or "disposition-based" view of emotions bridges the gap between biological organisms and artificial systems. If emotions are simply specific arrangements of cognitive resources to deal with challenges, then machines can, in theory, be programmed to have emotions.
