While Erikson originally established eight stages of psychosocial development, his wife and collaborator, Joan M. Erikson, added a ninth stage in this work to address the unique challenges of very old age (the 80s and 90s).
In this stage, the previous eight stages are revisited in reverse order. For example, the sense of "Basic Trust" is tested again as physical health declines and one must rely on others.
